Blackfin tuna are the most common and accessible tuna in Louisiana waters, offering hard-fighting action, excellent table fare, and year-round opportunities on offshore charter trips.

Appearance

Blackfin tuna are the smallest of the Atlantic tuna species, with a dark metallic blue-black back and silver sides marked by a distinctive bronze or golden stripe running along the lateral line. Their fins are predominantly dark, and like other tuna species they have a series of small finlets running toward the tail. Their compact, torpedo-shaped body is built for speed and makes them surprisingly powerful fighters for their size.

Habitat

Blackfin tuna are found in warm offshore waters throughout the Gulf of Mexico and are frequently encountered around oil platforms, reefs, wrecks, flotsam, and offshore structure. Unlike yellowfin and bigeye tuna, blackfin regularly venture closer to shore and are commonly caught in waters ranging from 50 to 300 feet deep, making them one of the most accessible tuna species available to Louisiana anglers.

Average Size

Most blackfin tuna caught in Louisiana waters weigh between 5 and 25 pounds, though fish in the 30-pound range are caught regularly and exceptional individuals approaching 40 pounds are possible. A 20-pound blackfin on light tackle provides a memorable fight.

Best Time to Catch

Blackfin tuna can be caught year-round in Louisiana's offshore waters. Fall and winter often produce excellent action around nearshore platforms and structure, while spring and summer bring consistent opportunities further offshore as baitfish become abundant throughout the Gulf.

Fishing Tips

Blackfin tuna are commonly caught trolling small lures and rigged baits, chunking with sardines or squid, or live-baiting around oil platforms and offshore reefs. Chumming is highly productive for drawing fish to the boat and keeping schools near long enough for multiple hookups. Bird activity, bait schools, and floating debris are all reliable indicators of nearby fish. Light to medium spinning or conventional tackle enhances the fight and makes every blackfin an exciting catch.
