Gag grouper are powerful reef fish known for hard-hitting fights, structure battles, and excellent table fare.
Gag grouper are heavy-bodied fish with a mottled gray to brown coloration covered in irregular dark markings. Their coloring can vary depending on habitat and age, helping them blend into reefs, rocks, and other bottom structure. Like other grouper species, they have large mouths designed for ambushing prey.
Gag grouper are commonly found around reefs, rocks, wrecks, oil platforms, and other bottom structure throughout the Gulf of Mexico. Younger fish are often found in shallower nearshore waters and estuaries, while larger adults typically inhabit offshore waters ranging from 60 to more than 250 feet deep. Trophy-sized fish are frequently associated with deeper structure.
Most gag grouper caught by Louisiana anglers weigh between 10 and 30 pounds, although fish exceeding 50 pounds are possible. Large adults are among the most powerful bottom fish in Gulf waters.
Gag grouper can be caught throughout much of the year when seasons are open, though fishing is often best when water temperatures are moderate and fish are actively feeding around offshore structure.
Live bait, cut bait, and large jigs are all productive choices for gag grouper. Focus on reefs, wrecks, rock piles, and oil platforms where these ambush predators hide near the bottom. Once hooked, reel aggressively and maintain steady pressure to keep the fish from diving back into structure and breaking off.
74.43 pounds — caught by Abel Ceja in 2013. This impressive fish remains Louisiana’s state-record gag grouper and showcases the trophy potential of the Gulf’s offshore reefs and platforms.
A large gag grouper can inhale prey using powerful suction, pulling fish and crustaceans into its mouth before the prey has time to react.
