Goliath grouper are massive catch-and-release giants known for overwhelming strength and unforgettable battles around Gulf structure.

Appearance

Goliath grouper are true giants of the Gulf. They can grow to more than 8 feet in length and weigh over 800 pounds. Adults range from brown to olive-green in color and are covered in small dark spots across their body, fins, and head. Their massive heads and thick bodies give them a bass-like appearance on an enormous scale.

Habitat

Unlike many grouper species, goliath grouper can tolerate brackish water and are occasionally found in bays, passes, and estuaries. Adults are commonly associated with reefs, wrecks, rock piles, oil platforms, and other large structures in waters less than 150 feet deep.

Average Size

Most goliath grouper encountered by anglers weigh between 100 and 400 pounds, although much larger fish are possible.

Best Time to Catch

Goliath grouper can be encountered year-round in Louisiana waters wherever suitable structure exists. Larger fish are often found around offshore wrecks, reefs, and platforms.

Fishing Tips

Heavy-duty tackle is essential when targeting goliath grouper. Large live baits and cut baits fished near reefs, wrecks, and offshore structure are commonly used. Once hooked, anglers must apply maximum pressure immediately to keep the fish from reaching cover.

Louisiana State Record

No official Louisiana state record exists. Harvest and possession of goliath grouper are prohibited, making the species ineligible for state record recognition.

Fun Fact

Goliath grouper can produce a deep booming sound using their swim bladder, and the noise can sometimes be heard underwater from considerable distances away.
