Largemouth bass are the kings of freshwater fishing in Louisiana, offering accessibility, exciting strikes, and the chance to land a trophy fish.

Appearance

Largemouth bass are one of North America’s most popular freshwater game fish. They have a dark green to olive-colored back that fades to lighter green or yellow along the sides and belly. Most fish display a dark horizontal stripe running the length of their body. Their most recognizable feature is their oversized mouth, which extends beyond the eye and gives the species its name.

Habitat

Largemouth bass thrive in Louisiana’s lakes, rivers, reservoirs, bayous, ponds, and backwater areas. They prefer locations with abundant cover such as submerged vegetation, fallen trees, cypress roots, docks, grass beds, and other structure that allows them to ambush prey.

Average Size

Most largemouth bass caught in Louisiana weigh between 1 and 5 pounds, although fish exceeding 8 pounds are considered trophies. Louisiana waters regularly produce bass in the double-digit range.

Best Time to Catch

Spring is widely considered the best time to target largemouth bass, particularly during the spawning season when fish move into shallow water. Early mornings and evenings can provide excellent fishing throughout much of the year.

Fishing Tips

Early morning and late evening are often the most productive times to fish for bass. Approach fishing areas quietly, especially in calm water conditions. Popular lures include plastic worms, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, jigs, topwater lures, and swimbaits. Focus on vegetation, timber, docks, and other structure where bass wait to ambush prey.
