Appearance

Wahoo are long, streamlined predators with steel-blue backs, silver sides, and distinctive dark vertical stripes running down their bodies. Built for speed, they have razor-sharp teeth and can exceed seven feet in length.

Habitat

Wahoo are typically found in deep blue offshore waters around weed lines, offshore humps, drop-offs, oil platforms, and current breaks. They are highly migratory and often follow schools of baitfish.

Average Size

Most Louisiana wahoo weigh between 20 and 60 pounds, although fish exceeding 80 pounds are common. Trophy fish can surpass 100 pounds.

Wahoo can be caught year-round, but cooler months often produce some of the largest fish in Louisiana waters.

Fishing Tips

Trolling is the preferred method for targeting wahoo. High-speed trolling with lures around weed lines, offshore humps, and oil platforms is especially productive. Natural baits and rigged trolling baits can also be effective.
